Coming from the east, Gaskessel is the gateway to the city. If you catch sight of its skyward-striving shape, you are as safe in Wuppertal as if you were standing next to the suspension railroad. This is where Wuppertal begins – to be amazing and entertaining; to be fun. For decades, the city was supplied with energy from here in the form of kilojoules and cubic meters. Today, the disk gas holder, which was listed as a historical monument in 1998, supplies the city with creative energy in the form of fascinating shows and exhibitions.

In the early 1950s, MAN’s Gustavsburg plant was commissioned to build a new disk-type gas tank in Wuppertal Heckinghausen. Its silhouette, over 66 meters high, still dominates the cityscape today. The first filling of the gas boiler with 60,000 cubic meters of long-distance gas took place on 20 February 1952.

Technological progress was both the birth and cause of death of the gas boiler. Modern pipeline technology for natural gas ensured the supply and made the storage of gas in large tanks superfluous. After 45 reliable years of operation, the boiler on Mohrenstrasse was finally taken off the grid in 1997.

As a landmark of Heckinghausen and a testimony to the town’s industrial history, it was placed under a preservation order in 1998.

In summer 2016, the Wuppertal-based architecture studio GKM brought the Gaskessel back to life. Today, it is the only building of its kind to house a modern new concrete structure inside.
The idea and the conversion of the former disc gas holder are unique in the world and a fascinating experience for every visitor.
